About Palatine Lodge No.97
Constituted 1757

Wearside Masonic Temple, Burdon Road, Sunderland, England

The detailed history of the lodge is set out on this website for all to see and whilst successive generations of Worshipful Masters, officers and brethren may have added their own individual footprints in many general ways the underlying principles of charity, care in the community and service to our society of freemasons, established so many years ago, remain firmly intact in this lodge.

Many challenges and changes have occurred in the past and have been dealt with; even a cursory look at our 250-year history would show that our fortunes have ebbed and flowed from time to time; at one time we were near to total dissolution.
Inspirational leadership in the shape of Bro Michael Scarth saved the lodge on that occasion by giving the members certain ideals to aim for and the means to achieve them.

The challenge for this lodge, and other Sunderland lodges in the late 1920s was to find a home to house the great expansion in the membership and number of Sunderland lodges.
This challenge was met by the involvement of our Sunderland lodges in building Wearside Masonic Temple and Palatine Lodge was fully involved in that venture.

Of late the main concerns for the lodge have been whether we would have to leave our 75 year old Sunderland Temple whilst continuing to plan to make suitable arrangements to celebrate our 250 year existence and to satisfy ourselves that we could, on that occasion, make a meaningful contribution to the Durham Provincial 2010 Festival.

Palatine Lodge’s 62 members have just celebrated the 250th Anniversary of the Lodge in a most satisfactory and charitable manner. We have celebrated our past. We now look forward with confidence to our future.
